Choosing the Los Angeles airport

Van Nuys (VNY) is the busiest private jet airport in the region, with FBOs including Signature Aviation, Jet Aviation and Clay Lacy Aviation, and is usually the best choice for Beverly Hills, Bel Air and the Westside. Hollywood Burbank (BUR) is closer to Hollywood, Glendale, Pasadena and the studios. Our guide to Los Angeles private jet airports compares them in detail.

LAX makes sense for the South Bay, El Segundo or a connection to an airline flight, but its airspace and ramps are the busiest in the region. For Newport Beach and Irvine, John Wayne Airport (SNA) is the natural choice; it has strict noise abatement procedures that the operator plans around.

On the Phoenix side

Scottsdale (SDL) is the usual departure point, with three FBOs and no airline traffic. Sky Harbor (PHX) is the closest airport to downtown Phoenix and Tempe, and Deer Valley (DVT) and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway (IWA) suit the north and east Valley. The Phoenix hub explains the trade-offs.

Aircraft, timing and traffic

A light jet handles the route easily with up to about seven passengers; a midsize jet is worth it for more bags or a stand-up cabin. Because flight time is short, the drive in Los Angeles can take as long as the flight, so the airport you choose matters more than the aircraft.

Arizona does not change its clocks, so in summer Los Angeles is on the same time as Phoenix and in winter it is one hour behind. Van Nuys asks jets to avoid departures and arrivals between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., and Burbank has noise restrictions at night, so late returns are best planned in advance.
