The same-day round trip costs little more than the one-way, because the one-way price already includes the empty flight home. Coast-to-coast and transatlantic one-ways carry the largest repositioning cost, so an aircraft with an onward booking or an empty leg saves the most. How is private jet charter cost estimated?
- Flight time. Great-circle distance divided by the class's typical cruise speed, plus about 20 minutes for taxi, climb and descent. Long legs beyond a class's practical range get a fuel stop. Check any route with the flight time calculator.
- Hourly rate by class (table above).
- Repositioning. On a one-way trip the calculator adds the empty return at 60 to 100 percent of the occupied flight's cost, because it is billed in full unless the aircraft has another trip waiting or the operator discounts it.
- Fees and minimums. Landing, handling and FBO fees per leg, crew hotel and per diem for each night away, and a daily minimum of about two billed hours on days the aircraft waits for you.
- Taxes. Domestic US charter pays 7.5% federal excise tax plus $5.30 per passenger per segment in 2026; international flights pay $23.40 per passenger per US arrival or departure instead, according to the IRS Form 720 instructions. The charter tax calculator breaks these out.
