Los Cabos or Cabo San Lucas
Los Cabos International (SJD) is the main airport, about 11 km from San José del Cabo, and serves the whole corridor to Cabo San Lucas. It is operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, has a long runway of nearly 9,900 feet, and has its own FBO for private flights. Most charters from Phoenix land here.
Cabo San Lucas International (MMSL) is a smaller airport about 17 nautical miles to the southwest, closer to Cabo San Lucas, with a single runway of about 7,000 feet. It can save drive time to resorts at the Cabo San Lucas end of the corridor; the operator confirms handling, immigration and customs for your arrival before suggesting it.
Entering Mexico
Every passenger needs a valid passport. Visitors receive their Mexican tourist permit at the first airport of entry, and AOPA notes that a child traveling with only one parent should carry a notarized letter of consent from the other parent.
The paperwork falls on the operator. As of 2026, Mexico's civil aviation agency (AFAC) requires prior authorization for each flight, and since September 2025 Mexican immigration requires passenger and crew lists to be sent before departure and confirmed once the doors close. Charter operators also need Mexican insurance in addition to their US policy. Your passenger names, dates of birth and passport details are needed well before the flight. For a broader checklist, see our guide to international private jet travel.
Mexican government and airport fees on private flights rose in 2026, according to AOPA. Ask for a quote that lists landing, parking, handling and immigration fees separately from flight time.
Flying home: US customs
The operator files US passenger and crew manifests through CBP's eAPIS system before departure and before the return. On the way back, US rules require most private and charter aircraft arriving from Mexico to land for customs at the designated airport nearest the border crossing, such as Tucson, Nogales or Yuma, unless the operator holds an overflight exemption that lets it clear customs further inland.
With an exemption, the flight can clear at a Phoenix-area customs airport. Scottsdale Airport offers user-fee customs daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the fee prepaid online; Sky Harbor has customs as well. Ask the operator before booking whether the return will be nonstop to Phoenix or include a customs stop near the border, because it changes the schedule.
Aircraft and timing
A light jet covers the route nonstop with a small group; a midsize jet adds a stand-up cabin and baggage room for a week of luggage or golf clubs, and a super midsize jet suits groups of eight to ten.
Many Cabo trips are round trips with several nights away, so compare a round trip with crew waiting against two one-way flights, and check empty legs from Mexico back to the US. The charter cost calculator shows both options.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How long is a private jet flight from Phoenix to Cabo?
About two hours in a light or midsize jet, depending on winds and the aircraft. The return can take longer if the flight has to stop for US customs near the border.
Do I need a passport to fly private to Cabo?
Yes. Every passenger needs a valid passport, and the operator needs the details in advance for the Mexican and US manifests.
Can I fly straight back from Cabo to Scottsdale?
Only if the operator holds a US overflight exemption. Otherwise the aircraft must land first at a designated airport near the border, such as Tucson, for customs, then continue to Phoenix.
Which Cabo airport do private jets use?
Most land at Los Cabos International (SJD), the main international airport. Cabo San Lucas International (MMSL) is a smaller alternative closer to Cabo San Lucas.
