Private jet range map: how far can a private jet fly?
Light jets fly about 1,500 to 2,200 nautical miles nonstop, super midsize jets 3,100 to 4,000, and ultra long range jets up to 7,700. The map above shows the real reach of each aircraft from any airport.
How to read the range map
Choose a departure airport, or let us find the nearest one to you. Then add up to six aircraft. Each aircraft gets a colour and two rings centred on your departure: a solid planning range ring and a dashed maximum range ring.
Add a destination to see the great-circle route, the distance in nautical miles, and whether each aircraft can fly it nonstop. We also show the smallest aircraft in our guide that can carry your group nonstop, because the right jet is usually the smallest one that does the job comfortably.
Rings are geodesic, so they are accurate on the globe even for intercontinental distances. Specifications come from rounded manufacturer data and are explained on each aircraft page.
What changes real-world range
- Passengers and baggage. A full cabin can mean less fuel, and less range.
- Winds. Westbound winter flights over the US and Atlantic can face 100+ knot headwinds.
- Runway and temperature. Short or high-altitude runways on hot days limit takeoff weight.
- Reserves and alternates. Over-water and remote routes need more fuel in reserve.
- The specific aircraft. Engine and avionics upgrades vary between airframes of the same model.
Range by aircraft class
Private jet range by aircraft class
A light jet flies about 1,500–2,200 nautical miles nonstop, a midsize jet 1,800–2,900, a super midsize jet 3,100–4,000 and a heavy jet 3,400–6,000. Those are published maximums; for planning, take about 15% off for a full cabin, winter headwinds and fuel reserves.
| Class | Published range | Safe planning range | Seats | Example aircraft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light Jets | 1,500–2,200 nm | 1,275 nm+ | 6–8 | Hawker 400XP, Learjet 45XR, Phenom 300E |
| Midsize Jets | 1,800–2,900 nm | 1,530 nm+ | 7–9 | Citation Excel / XLS, Learjet 60XR, Hawker 800XP |
| Super Midsize Jets | 3,100–4,000 nm | 2,635 nm+ | 8–10 | Hawker 4000, Challenger 300 / 350, Citation Sovereign+ |
| Heavy Jets | 3,400–6,000 nm | 2,890 nm+ | 10–16 | Legacy 600 / 650, Challenger 605 / 650, Gulfstream GIV-SP |
How far can each class fly from Phoenix, New York, Los Angeles and Miami?
The farthest popular destinations every jet in the class can reach nonstop with the safe planning range (over-water legs get an extra 10% margin), with approximate flight time. Straight-line distances; real routings run a little longer. Heavy jets also bring a larger cabin and baggage hold, and longer-range heavy and ultra long range jets cross the Atlantic nonstop.

FAQ
Private jet range questions
How far can a private jet fly without refueling?
It depends on the class. Very light jets fly about 1,100 to 1,500 nautical miles, light jets 1,500 to 2,200, midsize jets 1,800 to 2,900, super midsize jets 3,100 to 4,000, heavy jets up to about 6,000, and ultra long range jets such as the Gulfstream G650ER and Global 7500 between 7,000 and 7,700 nautical miles.
Why are there two rings for each aircraft?
The dashed ring is the manufacturer's published maximum range, typically quoted with light loads and calm winds. The solid ring is a planning range 15% shorter, which is closer to what you can count on with a full cabin, winter headwinds and required fuel reserves.
Can a private jet fly from New York to London nonstop?
Yes. New York to London is about 3,000 nautical miles, which is within the planning range of most super midsize jets such as the Praetor 600 and Falcon 2000, and every heavy and ultra long range jet. Light and midsize jets need a fuel stop, typically in Canada, Greenland or Iceland.
Can a private jet fly from Los Angeles to Hawaii?
Los Angeles to Honolulu is about 2,200 nautical miles over water with no diversion options, so operators carry larger reserves. Long-range midsize jets such as the Citation Latitude are at the limit; most operators use a super midsize jet or larger. Light jets cannot fly this route.
