Chartering a private jet should be effortless. Most of the problems we see come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here is how to sidestep them.

1. Not checking who is actually operating the flight

Every legal charter flight in the US is operated by an FAA Part 135 certificate holder. Your quote should name the operator. If it does not, ask. Then ask about independent safety ratings such as ARGUS, Wyvern or IS-BAO. Avoid anyone offering a private aircraft "for hire" without a Part 135 certificate: these illegal charters may lack proper training, maintenance oversight and insurance. See how we vet operators.

2. Choosing the wrong size of aircraft

Too small, and you are uncomfortable or stuck with a fuel stop. Too large, and you pay for range and space you do not need. Start with passengers, baggage and distance. Our range explorer shows exactly which aircraft can fly your route nonstop.

3. Forgetting about baggage

Golf bags, skis, strollers and large hard cases take more room than people expect, and light jets have limited holds. Tell your advisor what you are bringing so the aircraft fits it.

4. Comparing quotes on price alone

Two quotes for the same trip can differ because of the aircraft's age, the operator's safety record, repositioning and which fees are included. Compare the aircraft, operator and line items, not just the total.

5. Ignoring empty legs and flexibility

If your dates or times are flexible, say so. An aircraft repositioning on your route can cut the price significantly. Read how to save money when chartering a private jet.

6. Leaving it too late at peak times

Last-minute charter is one of private aviation's great strengths, but around holidays, Super Bowl weekend, Art Basel or the Masters, the best aircraft book up early. Plan ahead for peak dates.

7. An unorganised itinerary

Changing plans is easy on a charter, but each change can affect crew duty limits, airport slots and catering. Share the full itinerary, including return timing, as early as you can.

8. Not bringing ID

The crew will verify each passenger's identity. Bring a government-issued photo ID, and passports for any international flight.

9. Assuming private jets are out of reach

Many people never ask. For a group sharing a light or midsize jet, the cost per person can be closer to first class than you think. Try the private jet charter cost estimator and see.
