Private Terminals and FBOs

Airlines compete to build the finest first-class lounges. Private aviation lets you skip the need for one. Here is what the ground experience is like at a private terminal.

What is an FBO?

A fixed base operator, or FBO, is the private terminal where business aircraft are handled. Most larger airports have one or more, separate from the airline terminals. They offer lounges, conference rooms, pilot services and ramp access, and they are where your trip begins.

Arriving

  • Drive up to the door. Parking is usually free and steps from the entrance. At many FBOs, your car can drive onto the ramp to the aircraft, subject to airport rules.
  • No queues. There is no airline check-in and, on most charter flights, no TSA checkpoint. The crew will verify your ID.
  • Arrive 15 to 30 minutes before departure. That is usually all the time you need.

Waiting, if you want to

Every major private aviation hub has comfortable lounges, refreshments, Wi-Fi and private rooms. If the rest of your party is still on the way, it is a quiet place to wait. With no fixed boarding time, many clients walk straight through to the aircraft.

Baggage

Your bags are loaded by the crew and are in the aircraft with you, never checked. Tell us in advance about golf bags, skis or large cases so we can confirm they fit the aircraft's baggage hold.

International departures

For international flights, customs and immigration are often handled at the FBO itself, both departing and arriving. Have passports and any visas ready; your advisor will confirm document requirements before you fly.

Arranged by us

Your advisor coordinates the FBO, catering, ground transport and any special requests, so all you need to do is arrive.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How early should I arrive for a private flight?

Fifteen to thirty minutes before departure is usually plenty for domestic flights. For international departures, allow extra time for passport checks, and confirm with your advisor.

Is there security screening for private jets?

Passengers on most charter flights do not go through TSA checkpoints. The crew verifies identification, and operators follow their own security programmes. Larger aircraft and some airports have additional screening requirements.
